China speak on tension in Korean Peninsula

In Defense, South Korea on May 31, 2010 at 12:21 pm

Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao

China broke silence on 30th May when its Premier Wen Jiabao called for proper handling of Cheonan incident, defusing tension and avoiding any possible conflict. He was addressing a joint press conference after a summit meeting. Chinese Premier urged all North East Asian nations must help in maintaining peace and stability . He assured that China will continue to enhance communication with relevant parties to steer the situation towards peace and stability in the region.

The two day summit at a South Korean resort island was organized to defuse current tension. It was attended by Prime Ministers of China & Japan and President of South Korea.

The summit assumes importance because China participated in the consultations and supported peace & stability in the region for the first time during the present crisis. Chinese influence over North Korea will have to be leveraged properly for return to normalcy.

Attempt on life of Sri Sri Ravishankar

In India, Terrorism on May 31, 2010 at 6:45 am

Sri Sri Ravishankar, founder of The Art of Living &  spiritual guru whose mission is to spread peace and happiness was fired upon in Bengaluru on Sunday evening. His one aide got injured in the firing.

I had the opportunity once to listen to his discourse and views during his Srinagar(J & K) visit in 2004.I found his philosophy & views were relevant and his concern for peace was genuine.

One wonders why someone has to make attempt on the life of a person who has dedicated himself to the cause of peace, harmony, happiness and non violence?

You will agree that we can count the number of such living apostles of peace & non violence on finger tips. Their life, mission & philosophy needs to be preserved and used for the benefit of humanity.

Allegations of fake encounter in J & K

In Defense, India on May 30, 2010 at 11:58 am

One recollects the early 90’s when allegations of fake encounters were levelled against the security forces  at the drop of a hat and almost all of them turned out to be false as they were made under duress to discredit & disrepute SF.

Times have changed and number of fake encounter allegations have come down drastically.Conduct of serious and impartial enquiry in each allegation by SF has enhanced confidence of civil population.Duress factor in such allegations has also reduced drastically.

In view of the aforesaid, it becomes incumbent on the SF to promptly take note of and investigate to ensure that truth prevails . Guilty must be booked and punished severely.

Accordingly Army has already orderded a high level inquiry in current Machhil allegation. Defence Minister has also assured full cooperation to police investigation. Let us all be reassured that only truth shall prevail.

Update on Jharkhand impasse

In India, Politics on May 30, 2010 at 3:55 am

True to his reputation, Shibu Soren refused to resign and step down from CM chair in-spite of publicly accepting rotational power sharing agreement with BJP. After a rethink central leadership of BJP once again decided to withdraw support to Shibu govt and informed the Governor accordingly.

Governor has directed Shibu Soren to prove his majority support on the floor of state assembly on 31 May.

Political impasse in Jharkhand continues and suspense will only be over on 31 May. Let us hope that fresh elections will not be forced on the state so soon due to immaturity and stubbornness of state political leadership.

P.S.  Shibu Soren has submitted his resignation as CM  ahead of scheduled assembly session to prove majority as he failed to muster requisite support.

President’s rule has been imposed on 1st June as all three major political parties have failed to form the Govt in Jharkhand.

Jordan Romero

Jordan Romero , aged 13 years, from California created history when he reached at the top of worlds highest mountain peak on 22 May 2010 and becoming the youngest person ever to climb Mount Everest.

Sahil Kaushik, aged 14 years, a home schooled boy from Delhi topped the Delhi zone IIT JEE 2010 Exam.

Both Jordan and Sahil have defied the age barrier and achieved extraordinarily superlative success.

I believe they are harbingers of the super generation.

Kudos and salute to these young amazers.

Update on imbroglio in Thailand

In Politics, Thailand on May 29, 2010 at 1:07 pm

Abhisit Vejjajiva (Prime Minister,Thailand)

Red shirt demonstrators were dispersed by the Govt troops last week in Bangkok. At least 50 people died and more than 400 got injured in the clashes. Curfew, which was imposed when troops moved in to quell the protests,  has now been lifted but emergency in 24 out of 76 provinces is still on.

Arrest warrant has been issued against former PM Thaskin on charges of inciting the protests and terrorism. Thaskin is not in Thailand and is living in self exile.

PM Abhisit has said that everything is fine and country is fast returning to normal.

It appears that situation has been brought under control for the time being. How long this lull will last before another storm brews in is any body’s guess. Let us hope that calm and peace prevails in Thailand.

Island Intrusion: Possible Terrorist Threat

In India, Terrorism on May 29, 2010 at 1:06 pm

Somali Fishermen

News article in today’s Times of India states Somalis  in Lakshadweep trigger alarm bells. Indian Navy and Coast Guards have apprehended half a dozen Somali nationals with their boats in Lakshadweep islands over the last two days. Initial investigations have not revealed anything suspicious and in all probability they might be  genuine lost fishermen.

Notwithstanding the aforesaid, we should not take this apparently innocuous intrusion lightly. If half a dozen fishermen can make it to Lakshadweep islands, what prevents fully trained & motivated armed terrorists from invading far flung uninhabited Indian islands?

We must audit and review our existing island surveillance and domination plans as well as capabilities. If necessary additional resources in terms of  equipment and manpower should be deployed.Aerial surveillance and satellite imagery should be co opted  to ensure effective & fail proof plans.

It goes without saying that total integration of all resources and full coordination between all involved agencies will be the key to success.

Update on tension in Korean peninsula

In Defense, South Korea on May 28, 2010 at 10:44 am

60th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War is on 25 June 2010 and the peninsula is once again in the limelight due to flaring up of tensions between South & North Korea. Current state is due to sinking of South Korean warship Cheonan on 26 March10 allegedly by North Korean torpedo.

Obama administration has stood solidly with South and supporting its all demands. North Korea on the other hand seems to be standing alone as China has not taken any open stand till now.

South Korea conducted an anti submarine exercise in Yellow Sea on27 May.North Korea has reacted by saying that it would meet confrontation with confrontation and war with an all out war. Such action and reaction will lead to further escalation. Care must be taken to ensure that minor issues are not allowed to spin out of control and trigger an all out war. Repercussions of full blown war with nuclear capable North Korea could be disastrous for all.

Diplomatic initiatives must be undertaken to resolve the crisis. UN will have to involve USA and China to steer the Korean peninsula clear of  the crisis.

Train derailment due to suspected Naxal blast

In India, Terrorism on May 28, 2010 at 2:05 am

It really saddened my heart when I woke up to the news of 15 dead and more than 50 injured due to derailment of  13 bogies of Gyaneshwari Express near West Midnapore in West Bengal. Railway is suspecting Maoist naxals behind the blast.

My heartfelt deep condolences to the bereaved families and early recovery wishes to the injured.

Nation needs to search answers as to why & till when innocent lives will continue to be lost due to such mindless brutal acts of violence? Are the citizens of a peaceful democratic nation entitled to the fundamental right of safety & security? If yes, then who is responsible to ensure? It is time to fix responsibilities of those who time and again fail in their constitutional obligations towards citizens of this nation. I  am sure you agree with me.

P. S.  Death toll has gone up to more than 100 and number of injured has risen to more than 200.
