Indian Debacle at T20 World Cup : Demand for Dhoni’s Head

In Cricket, sports on May 15, 2010 at 1:19 pm

Lackluster  performance  of the fancied Indian squad in two consecutive T20 World Cups after winning the inaugural cup has triggered the demand for Dhoni’s head. One knows very well that if the skipper gets bouquets for success he has to face brickbats for failure. It is a part of the game and Dhoni is playing it cool.

Giving him the stick for the squad’s poor performance is correct but demanding his removal from captaincy seems like an illogical-knee jerk reaction that I do not subscribe to. Don’t forget his par excellence captaincy track record in all three formats of the game and  recently concluded IPL championships won by his Chennai outfit. How can he transform from Captain Charisma into a bad skipper in barely 2 weeks?

Dilip Vengserkar has very aptly stated that  removal of Dhoni from captaincy will peg the Indian cricket back by 5 years. As per him, Dhoni is the best bet and there is neither any requirement nor an availability of replacement.

I will advise Dhoni’s detractors as well as some sections of media who are raising the cacophony of his removal; to stop the irrational blitzkrieg  and concentrate on a constructive analysis of relevant reasons for poor performance of the “Team” viz fatigue, poor physical fitness, lack of preparation time, erratic schedules etc.

In a cricket loving nation like ours where everyone; from a paan-wallah to a boardroom director, are all critics of the game in their own right; electronic  & print media must act with restraint and should not get carried away with arm chair critics to enhance TRP’s.
