How Can Security Forces Avoid Casualties in Naxal Attacks

In Defense, India on June 30, 2010 at 12:59 pm

Attacks on security forces engaged in anti naxal operations are likely to increase if  we do not put in concerted efforts to prepare and train them for this specific task.

I would like to recommend some measures which will help security forces in gaining the upper hand and avoiding own casualties:-

Pre-induction Training. All units and individuals assigned for anti naxal duties must be put through structured training schedule of at least four weeks to prepare and familiarise them with terrain characteristics, modus operandi of naxals, local customs & traditions and specialized tactics & techniques to effectively tackle naxal threat. Emphasis must be on physical fitness, quick response, shooting skills for close quarter encounters, drills for counter ambush, search operations and anti-IED.

Intelligence network. Reliable, real time and actionable intelligence is must for planning & execution of precision operations without any co-lateral damage. Integration of all int agencies including local police is essential for success.

Equipment. Security forces must procure, maintain and train on specialized equipment eg mine detectors, IED jammers, anti mine vehicles, night vision devices and communication as well as monitoring systems.

Use of Protective Gear. Bullet proof head gear and jackets must always be worn during operations to avoid casualties.

Modified Vehicles. Suitable modifications of vehicles against bullets, grenade and IED attacks is essential to avoid casualties.

Camp Defence. Local defence of security force camps and posts must be planned, organised, co-ordinated and rehearsed properly to effectively ward off & counter naxal raid or attacks on them.

Alertness. Key to avoid casualties is alertness. One must always remain alert and develop sixth sense to detect any unusual activity or change in surroundings.

Abide by Drills & Procedures. Never violate time tested drills, procedures and teachings imparted during training. Maximum casualties take place when you become lax and violate the instructions.

Win Hearts & Minds of Locals. Your actions to win hearts and minds of local population will act as force multiplier towards your success as well as safety.

In soccer, sports on June 29, 2010 at 3:31 pm

The Line up for quarter finals is almost complete. Leadiing goal scorers of the tournament till this stage are:-

Gonzalo Higuan (Argentina)- 4 goals

Gonzalo Higuain

Robert Vittek (Chile)- 4 goals

Robert Vittek

Thomas Meuller (Germany)- 3 goals

Thomas Mueller

David Villa (Spain)- 3 goals

David Villa

Luis Suarez (Uruguay)- 3 goals

Luis Suarez

Robert Vittek of Chile who is presently at number two position has  no chance to remain in race as his team has already been knocked out from the competition.

Mueller,David Villa & Suarez will have to strive hard to catch up and overtake Gonzalo Higuain of Argentina who is leading the pack right from the word go.

I will put my stakes on Higuain of Argentina as his team  is expected to play in the tournament finals.

Wimbledon under shadow of FIFA World Cup 2010

In sports, Tennis on June 25, 2010 at 5:00 am

Juggernaut of football world cup 2010 is already rolling and now gathering momentum to reach at crescendo on 11 July 2010.

Another popular and important annual sporting event has commenced at Wimbledon. The start this year has been understandably quite as its schedule (21 June to 4 July) is totally eclipsed by FIFA world cup itinerary.

Notwithstanding this eclipse, followers of tennis will work out a via media to catch up with the Wimbledon simultaneously with football fever.

Roger Federer, the defending champion, is top seed and is gunning for record  equaling seventh singles title. Rafael Nadal, current French Open champion, is 2nd seed. Serena and Venus, the William sisters, are first two seeds respectively for ladies singles title.

Jaswant’s “Home Run”

In India, Politics on June 24, 2010 at 9:20 am

Mr Jaswant Singh is to rejoin BJP today. As per  BJP spokesman Ramnath Kovind, Jaswant Singh will be admitted to the party today in the presence of L K Advani and Gadkari.

One recollects how unceremoniously a senior party leader of Jaswant’s stature was shown the exit gate. The expulsion was attributed to Jaswat Singh’s book on Jinnah.

It has taken 10 months and a new party president to rewind the earlier decision and readmit Jaswant in BJP.

One fails to understand as to what has changed in the intervening period except the memory of so called offending views of the author.

Strange are the ways of politics !

Want to lose weight ? Follow China’s “1000 pound” Rappers

In Health on June 24, 2010 at 8:22 am

1000 pound rapper band (China)

Obesity has assumed alarming proportions, more so amongst the affluent strata of our society, and needs to be addressed seriously. We all are aware of ill effects of obesity, yet find ourselves in a state of terrible inertia.

Why?

Do we lack determination and will power? Or, simply we d0n’t care (attitudinal problem). Either way it is harmful and undesirable.

What can we do?

We have to make a beginning because a journey can only be completed if we begin it. As they say well begun is half done, we must therefore not only begin but begin it well.

Planning is another important factor to achieve effective success. One must chalk out a proper workable plan after taking in to account all essential inputs as well as strengths & weaknesses.

Perseverance is key to success. One should not give up but pursue the goal relentlessly till success is achieved.

We should therefore work on our diet, physical exercise regimen and mental robustness to successfully overcome the menace of obesity. Initial results may not be encouraging but do not give up. Breaking of initial fat crust may take some time but thereafter results will be visible and self motivating.

A word of caution, do not forget to take your doctor and physical trainer on board right from planning stage. Regular monitoring of medical parameters is essential.

Today only I read an article regarding weight loss by China’s popular “1000 pound” rappers, it is a real success story. Go through it and take the resolve today to overcome obesity.

Prithvi Missiles : A Saga of Success

In Defense, India on June 23, 2010 at 2:34 am

Integrated Guided Missile Development Program was started in 1983 with an aim of achieving self-reliance in research, development and production of all categories of tactical and strategic missile systems in India.

Prithvi was the first missile from the stable of this ambitious program which was developed, tested and produced indigenously by DRDO. Prithvi  proved to be a highly successful series of missiles and has paved the way for development  and production of an enviable state of the art family of advanced missile systems indigenously by DRDO.

Prithvi missile has three variants, one for each wing of armed forces.

  • Prithvi I. Surface to surface missile which can carry a warhead of 1000 kg up to a range of 150 km with an accuracy of 50 meters. This variant is for the Army and is operational with them since 1994.

    Prithvi I

  • Prithvi II. This variant is meant for fielding by Air Force. Range of this edition has since been enhanced from original 250 to 350 km with a payload of up to 1000 kg. This is a nuclear capable missile with improved aided inertial navigation system and capability to decieve ABMs. This missile was once again successfully tested on 18 June 2010 and is being inducted with Air Force.

    Prithvi II

  • Prithvi III. It is the naval version and is also called Dhanush. This ship to surface missile has been designed to achieve ranges up to 350,600 and 750 km with payloads of 1000,500 and 250kg respectively. This system has already been successfully tested six times, last being in December 2009, and is in advanced stages of induction in operational service.

    Prithvi III (Dhanush)

Successful development and fielding of Prithvi series of missiles with Indian Armed Forces is definitely a great feather in the cap of DRDO and entire scientist fraternity.
