In soccer, sports on July 7, 2010 at 5:57 am

Green Point Stadium of Cape Town witnessed a very keenly contested semi final on 6th July 2010. Teams of Uruguay and Netherlands entered the arena to out play each other and secure berth for the FIFA 2010 Final at Johannesburg. Display of football prowess by these teams was truly worthy of a semi final.

Bronckhorst, the Dutch captain, opened the scoring in 18th minute with a magnificent strike which is in reckoning for goal of the tournament.

Uruguay’s captain Diego Forlan replied back with an equally stunning strike in 41st minute and both teams remained tied at 1-1 till half time.

Second half also witnessed absorbing football. The Oranje struck twice in quick succession in 70th and 73rd minutes through Sneijder & Robben respectively. Pereira of Uruguay found the Dutch net in 90+2nd minute and reduced the Netherlands victory margin to 3-2.

Thus the Oranje earned the distinction of First to enter 2010 FIFA final. They will now meet the winner of German-Spain face off which is scheduled today at Durban.

Go for the GOAL………….

In Lifestyle on June 12, 2010 at 11:53 am

Go for the goal … end child labour.

Yes you got it right !

Today the 12th of June is the World Anti Child Labour Day and theme of the year “Go for the goal…end child labour” is very apt and coincides with the FIFA world cup 2010.

Let us rededicate ourselves to the cause of protecting the childhood and   say a very loud &  emphatic   “NO  to  CHILD   LABOUR”.

We must remember that  “Childhood is the Basic Right of every Child”.

Every child must be educated , empowered and enabled to blossom and make positive contribution to the humanity & human values.

Winner of FIFA World Cup 2010 is ?????

In soccer, sports on June 11, 2010 at 1:08 pm

The biggest sporting event of 2010 , FIFA Football World Cup, has begun in South Africa. It will take some time before the dust of inaugural ceremony settles down and team positions stabilizes in respective groups. Haze will only start clearing in quarter final matches and picture will become somewhat clear on finalization of semifinal lineup. Making a guess about the winner even at that stage will be hazardous because there will be very thin line difference between the top four teams. But it is human to guess and let us indulge.

Past Winners

Brazil have won the World Cup a record five times, with Italy hard on their heels with four wins and West Germany on three. Here is a list of all the World Cup winners along with runner-up and final score.

Year Host Winner Runner Up Score
1930 Uruguay Uruguay Argentina 4-2
1934 Italy Italy Czechoslovakia 2-1
1938 France Italy Hungary 4-2
1950 Brazil Uruguay Brazil 2-1
1954 Switzerland West Germany Hungary 3-2
1958 Sweden Brazil Sweden 5-2
1962 Chile Brazil Czechoslovakia 3-1
1966 England England West Germany 4-2
1970 Mexico Brazil Italy 4-1
1974 West Germany West Germany Netherlands 2-1
1978 Argentina Argentina Netherlands 3-1
1982 Spain Italy West Germany 3-1
1986 Mexico Argentina West Germany 3-2
1990 Italy West Germany Argentina 1-0
1994 United States Brazil Italy 0-0 (P)
1998 France France Brazil 3-0
2002 South Korea/Japan Brazil Germany 2-0
2006 Germany Italy France 1-1 (P)

Winner of 2010 ?

One must take in to account the availability of players, performance during the last one year, current form, strength & weakness as a team and record in past world cups before guessing & arriving at final four.

My take on final four is :-

Top Guns of FIFA World Cup 2010

In soccer, sports on June 4, 2010 at 11:59 am

Only seven days remaining  before the unfolding of biggest soccer extravaganza on this planet.

In an earlier post, I had listed the teams which are all time favorites and are likely to appear in the semi final lineup in South Africa.

Let us now focus our attention on individuals who must be keenly watched for their amazing & sterling soccer techniques & capabilities. The top guns of soccer who will be setting ablaze the world football arena with their awesome shooting &  fire power to lift the coveted cup for their nation and Golden Boot for themselves are listed here.

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi - His stop-and-go moves and brazen attacks make him the most exciting player in Europe — but can he blend in with Argentina's talent and all-new tactics

Wayne Rooney - Since bombing out in '06 on a red card, England's one-man strike force has had a calmer head. And a better one: he nodded in seven straight goals in one '09 stretch.

Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres - A World Class striker at club level that is still waiting to set alight the International game. Fully capable of scoring goals in South Africa but may have to play second fiddle behind his more proven teammate, David Villa.

Cristiano Ronaldo - Whislt a prolific goal scorer at club level, Ronaldo has yet to capture that kind of form for Portugal. He cannot be ruled out of shining on the biggest stage of all in South Afirca but his chances of winning the Fifa Golden Boot are restriced by his country's chances of progressing to the later stages of the World Cup

Fabiano Luis - A striker with unrivalled goalscoring form at International level but has never played in a World Cup finals at the age of 29. Lack of experience on the biggest stage and a tricky group for Brazil could see him struggle but remains a leading golden shoe contender.

David Villa - The man every other striker in South Africa must out-score. Proven he has what it takes in major tournaments after top scoring in Euro 2008, David Villa should be well in contention for the top goalscorer prize at the World Cup with Spain sure to be going a long way in the competition.
