Know About Diabetes

In Health on July 5, 2010 at 2:22 pm

Diabetes is a life style disease which is fast getting in the category of an epidemic. It has become very common and wide spread. The biggest problem with diabetes, as in the case of high/low blood pressure,is lack of awareness and consequent non-detection.

I will be failing in my duty as a human being if I do not contribute in creating awareness about this dreaded disease. Accordingly I will share basic details of diabetes with you.

What is diabetes ?

It is a disease that causes high levels of sugar/glucose in the blood. Normally sugar/glucose in blood is converted to energy through insulin which is released in blood by pancreas. Deficiency or absence of pancreatic insulin in a persons blood leads to higher levels of sugar/glucose.

Diabetes is of two types.

  • non insulin dependent in which external administration of insulin is not required for controlling blood sugar. This is more common and about 98 % cases of diabetes are in this category. Generally adults in 30 plus age group or persons with diabetic family history are prone to this type.
  • insulin dependent diabetes and it requires external administration of insulin through injection or pump for treatment because body stops production of insulin. It is rare and accounts for 2 % of total diabetic cases.

Detection

Absence of any immediate symptoms, specially in non insulin dependent type, results in non detection of diabetes for years together. Hence regular annual or periodic fasting blood sugar tests is essential for timely detection of diabetes.

Treatment

One must consult the doctor and treatment should be under supervision and monitoring of qualified specialist. Some preventive guidelines are balanced diet, regular physical exercise including appropriate yoga postures, healthy life style and regular medical check up.

Obesity has assumed alarming proportions, more so amongst the affluent strata of our society, and needs to be addressed seriously. We all are aware of ill effects of obesity, yet find ourselves in a state of terrible inertia.

Why?

Do we lack determination and will power? Or, simply we d0n’t care (attitudinal problem). Either way it is harmful and undesirable.

What can we do?

We have to make a beginning because a journey can only be completed if we begin it. As they say well begun is half done, we must therefore not only begin but begin it well.

Planning is another important factor to achieve effective success. One must chalk out a proper workable plan after taking in to account all essential inputs as well as strengths & weaknesses.

Perseverance is key to success. One should not give up but pursue the goal relentlessly till success is achieved.

We should therefore work on our diet, physical exercise regimen and mental robustness to successfully overcome the menace of obesity. Initial results may not be encouraging but do not give up. Breaking of initial fat crust may take some time but thereafter results will be visible and self motivating.

A word of caution, do not forget to take your doctor and physical trainer on board right from planning stage. Regular monitoring of medical parameters is essential.

Today only I read an article regarding weight loss by China’s popular “1000 pound” rappers, it is a real success story. Go through it and take the resolve today to overcome obesity.

Worst mass poisoning in history ?

In Health on June 22, 2010 at 12:27 pm

One chanced across an article on  the Arsenic poisoning through drinking water in Bangladesh. It is an horrifying fact that 77 million Bangladeshis, which is more than half of the population, are exposed to toxic levels of Arsenic. As we all know, Arsenic toxicity causes lot of serious medical problems including multiple organ failure and resultant death.

The cause of concern in this case is that, to a large extent, it is self inflicted man made disaster. Deep wells, without testing the arsenic contents, were provided to avoid contaminated shallow surface water, such callous and negligent attitude is non-pardonable to say the least.

We must wake up to the miseries and sufferings of our fellow human beings. Concerted global efforts are an absolute essential to overcome this mass poisoning which has been very aptly termed by WHO  as world’s worst mass poisoning in history surpassing the Bhopal and Chernobyl disasters.
